Lissandra, Me( Kim), Franki and Alex
Today was a shorter day of work for us, as we only worked in the morning and took the afternoon off for shopping and the beach. Although that seems like all fun and games, it actually opened up our eyes to the Dominican way of life here in S Pedro de Macoris. At the beach, many Dominicans came up to us trying to sell us dresses, t-shirts, jewelry, hats, sunglasses and more. Alejandra brought up how bad she feels trying to haggle with them because it is how they make their living. They wake up every morning and spend their entire day at the beach, away from their families, to try and sell these things and they aren't guaranteed anything. One man selling jewelry spent almost all of the time we were at the beach with us both days, hand making earrings, braclets, and necklaces for us right in front of our eyes. By the end of the day, he was calling us his friends and family. We feel happy to have bought so much from him because to him, this is the money he needs to survive. Although we don’t want to judge, it is still sad to see everyone living the way they live here.
We are so incredibly happy to be here and to be making a difference. However, we wish we could be leaving more of a mark and rising to our full potential because we know we could have done so much more for them. Unfortunately, the disorganization didn't allow for this, but there is always next time. As our week is almost coming to an end, Bintah brought up about how hard it will be for her to say goodbye to the people here. We are all feeling the same way and are going to be sad to be leaving. Goodbyes are never easy, especially with people as beautiful as the ones we have met here
